Best Dressed and Top Fashion Looks at the IIFA Awards 2014

Deepika Padukone at the IIFA Awards 2014

Bollywood’s young brigade definitely ruled the green carpet at the IIFA Awards, showcasing a gorgeous section of Indian fashion and designers with unique styles, impressing myself, and the fans with their elegance and originality.

I have personally chosen each of these looks as I love the diversity, embellishment and colours of each of the gowns which were proudly shown off as the stars one by one graced the green carpet. Vaani Kapoor specifically stood out for me, showcasing a stunning embellished gold tone backless dress by Raakesh Agarvwal, a sure favourite of mine. The highly embellished gowns in general were definitely my preference amongst the fashion designs; it’s a key look for this season and is extremely flattering and stands out from a crowd.

Kalki Koechlin was a key example of how to wear embellishment, wearing Gaurav Gupta, she stood out at the IIFA Awards in this dazzling soft coloured number detailed with shoulder padding detail and long sleeves which created a princess style look.

Deepika Padukone had opted for a red gown by Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad, she looked gorgeous in this figure hugging lace number and simple updo hairstyle, and although the dark berry lips weren’t for everyone, I personally loved them! In general lip colour at the IIFA Awards was very neutral and nude, a trend and overall fashion look that has taken this season by storm, and successfully completes every look. Especially for brides, a nude lip creates a subtle but noticeable make-up look, which will go with almost every gown colour and style.

All in all, I’d say that the Indian wedding dresses and gowns and fashion showcased at the IIFA Awards are some of the best I’ve seen for a long time, they had me wishing I owned half of them!

Here is a selection of some of my favourite styles from the IIFA Awards

Indian Designer Sougat Paul's collection at the Lakme Fashion Week Winter Festive 2014

Sheers, Florals and a splash of colour in the Sougat Paul collection from Lakme Fashion Week Winter Festive 14 – a lot of interesting styles!

Sougal Paul is a designer from Mumbai in India and is one of the younger designers on the ramp. He launched his label in 2010.

The designer’s collection was a good mix of very different styles. Some of the casual separates looked very good – like the floral printed pants and the cropped tops. The longer length evening dresses were my favourite though – very stylish.

Sougat Paul also included some sheer jackets and shirts that are just perfect for the season. These can be combined very nicely with other colourful pieces.

Specifically for brides, I think that the evening dresses are perfect for reception and evening events. These are unique and stylish – perfect to make a stylish entrance. The shapes appear to be more suited for smaller body types, but I think that some of the styles could be very universally suited for people of all body types.

Anita Dongre at Lakme Fashion Week Winter Festive 14

Anita Dongre has to be one of the most talented Indian designers out there. Her collections are exquisite and the pricing is just right. She is the must have designer for any bride looking to shop for her wedding.

In fact, i’d even say that guests and family members should look at Anita Dongre’s Bridal Collections because they are absolutely stunning. The colours, the detailing, everything is just in the right balance of creativity and commercial(ity).

I loved the use of unusual colours in her styles. Everyone is used to seeing Red, Pink and Yellow on brides, but this designer has taken bold steps and used Black in a way that is elegant and could certainly be considered by a bride.

There were also the traditional colours including midnight blues and rani pink’s. A lot of interesting separates on the ramp made the collection quite interesting for me. Vests and jackets could be picked up separately and worn in combination with say an anarkali or a salwar suit.

Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai – Winter Festive 2014 – Part II

So here is my second instalment from the Lakme Fashion Week (you read part I of the post, right?) ! The glamour continued on the ramp, but I had expected more. A lot of the big name bollywood stars that you’d normally expect to see at the Lakme Fashion Week were not necessarily present. A curious phase.

All the same, the clothes have been absolutely fab and I am loving every minute of the shows and the pictures that are being posted by Lakme Fashion Week officially (my source of the pictures).

The shows from this post that I really liked were Anju Modi and Sanjay Garg. Each of these designers created something very magical on the ramp, for different reasons.

Sanjay Garg

The fabrics used and the styling were very simple and exquisite. I especially loved the fact that there was no attempt to do too much, like designer’s sometimes do, but there was a confidence in the collection. The strength that this confidence adds to the styling cannot be easily described.

The colours were perfect for an Indian Wedding Dress – rich tones, brocades and a lot of splashes of gold – very important for me 🙂

Anju Modi

I loved Anju Modi’s collection. So effortlessly elegant and chic that it made me drool. The styles and the detailing were absolutely amazing, as is to be expected from a senior designer like Anju Modi. The colour scheme was perfect I think – very different and unusual for an Indian Bride, but exquisite and beautiful all the same!

Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai – Winter Festive 2014 – Part I

The Lakme Fashion Week is underway in Mumbai in India. Yet another fashion week I hear you say? It certainly is one more, but it’s exciting because Mumbai and this fashion week has been the hot-bed of Bollywood and the stars.

The designers from Mumbai, both who show there and the ones that are from there, are usually very well connected with the Bollywood stars and they get the stars to walk on the ramp for their shows. The show stoppers get as much attention as the clothes on the ramp!

This year, some Pakistani designers have also participated in the Lakme Fashion Week. A very welcome step, and one that got some beautiful styles to the Indian ramps. I love both types of designers, so for me this was very exciting!

The themes generally were very floral oriented. This did not make too much sense for an Autumn Winter collection, but certainly the styles are perfect for SS 15. Here are some of my favourite pics thus far – I have tried to balance the bridal and the non-bridal collections, since I LOVE bridal fashion but do have an interest in fashion obviously!

Indian Wedding Ceremonies and Fashion Tips

We all know that Indian weddings aren’t like most, but that is what makes them so beautiful and a celebration that everyone wants to experience.  But why do they last so long?! Well, this long lasting affair is down to the many rituals carried out, all having their own significance and importance.

These festivities will surely be extravagant and lavish as Indians love to splash out on celebrations. I can confidently say that you have not truly celebrated until you have experienced it the Indian way.

So what ceremonies are there and what does one wear to these? Each Indian community has their own unique ceremonies, but here are those shared by most of the communities. Indian Wedding Ceremonies are loud, colourful and a LOT of fun though.

Sangeet

The wedding celebrations usually start with this event where family and friends gather together and close members perform dances for the happy couple. This is followed by dinner, more music and dancing. It is a fun event which is enjoyed by all.

Indian Wedding Sangeet

Styling tips: Taking part in the dances? Then you should wear something vibrant and pretty but easy to wear, such as a light anarkali. But if you are a close friend or relative and want to wear something heavier you can easily change, following the dances, into an anarkali, lehenga or saree. If you aren’t close to the couple then a simple and colourful anarkali is a safe bet. You will be dancing a lot, so something flowy will be perfect!

Mehendi

This pre-wedding ritual is organised by the bride’s family, attended by women who are friends and family. It is an event where the bride has a change to spend quality time with the girls.  Everyone celebrates by dancing, laughing and getting mehendi, also known as henna, applied on their hands and/or feet. Applying Mehendi is beautiful, as it signifies love and affection.

Indian Mehendi Wedding Ceremony

Styling tips: You should wear something bright  and colourful, but light since you will be sitting uncomfortably for a while when getting Mehendi applied  – an anarkali or salwar would be appropriate.  Be warned that you might get mehendi on your outfit since it takes a while to dry, so perhaps you shouldn’t wear your favourite attire!

Haldi

This is another messy but fun ceremony which is a cleansing and purifying ceremony performed before the wedding day. A detoxifying (mostly turmeric based) paste is applied on the face, hands and feet of the bride and groom. This is supposed to bring a glow to the skin which will create more attraction between the couple.

Indian Wedding Haldi Ritual

Styling tips: Similarly to the mehendi ceremony, wear something bright and light, but not precious to you – as you will be applying this paste on the bride and if they’re feeling mischevious, they may put some back on you too! A simple anarkali or salwar will be a good choice.

Wedding

The big day has finally arrived and consists of many symbolic rituals performed throughout the day, starting with the bride’s family welcoming the groom and his family and eventually ending with the performance of the marriage ceremony.

Indian Wedding Ceremony

Styling tips: A rich and heavy saree or lehenga is the most common outfit to wear on this day and apart from black, any colour can be worn. Just make sure you dress to impress and accessoriz    e as there will be hundreds (sometimes thousands) of people attending and lots of photos being taken!

Reception

This is a celebration which like most other cultures involves lots of eating, drinking and dancing. It is usually organized by the groom’s family to celebrate the arrival of the beautiful bride into their family.

Indian Wedding Reception

Styling tips: A long elegant gown, stunning saree or chic anarkali will be the right choice for this occasion and you can finally wear black!

The beauty and romance of an Indian wedding is like no other. Embrace these grand festivities, dress extravagantly and most importantly enjoy! Indian Wedding Ceremonies are part and parcel of the experience, so enjoy these as much as you can!

BMW India Bridal Fashion Week 2014 – Part II

Hello everyone!

Sorry for the long delay in posting, but I had to get some things organised at home. Here is the second instalment from India Bridal Fashion Week. This post covers day 4. The shows were again awesome and the collections were stunning.

I like colour and am usually include a lot of colour in my everyday dressing, but I have to say that the colours on the ramp in the JJ Valaya show were superb! Such nice combination of colours and presented in such a lovely way on the ramp – very refreshing to see. So i’ll start this post with some pictures of the lovely Sarees and Lehengas in the JJ Valaya Show at the India Bridal Fashion Week.

JJ Valaya's Styles at the India Bridal Fashion Week
JJ Valaya
Meera Muzzafar Ali are designers for their brand Kotwara – it’s a brand that is rooted in tradition and offers very classic cuts. I like some of their styles, but not all. One style that stood out on the ramp for me was this one because of the overall look, not necessarily because of the clothes. But that is my personal preference and not necessarily a reflection on the quality of their collection.
