Indian Weddings – Capturing Emotions Through Pictures

Weddings are full of all kinds of emotion from everyone attending. The bride and groom are obviously going through a lot since it is one of the biggest days of their lives, but equally the family, friends and other attendees – in the case of Indian weddings, also the neighbours, cousin’s neighbours, etc. to make the multitude of guests that usually attend the wedding.

I have always found it fascinating that the emotions that are expressed by different people during the ceremonies vary so dramatically. Does it qualify truly as an emotional roller coaster jam packed into some days of ceremonies? Sometimes the emotions captured through the lens are truly magical. They have so much expression and so many stories to tell. Of course the ones in the pictures might remember the instance vividly, but also for someone from the outside seeing the pictures, they convey so much.

I love these pictures from Nik Thakar capturing so much emotion from the bride, groom and the guests. The emotions range from absolute joy from the groom’s party in the first picture, to the brides in the pictures who have eyes full of hope, fear and anticipation, to the absolute joy in the faces of the family members around the couple.

The last picture is one of my favourites because if captures an essential moment in the life of the couple. I often wonder what goes through the couple’s minds during the entire ceremony – are they thinking of the times they spent together, how they met, how they got to that moment, of their family and friends around, about the future arrangements, about the next phase of their lives? or are they simply going through the motions and getting it done? Brides certainly with the weight of their lehengas cannot wait for the ceremony to finish I am sure, if for nothing else, but to get into something more comfortable! 🙂

Anyone have thoughts to share around this – I’d love to hear!

Beautiful Wedding Photography by Neil Walker

Neil Walker has been a professional photographer for the last 20 years. He got his start shoot advertising photography and portraits both in the UK & internationally. He has had an incredibly varied career to date, which has enabled him to photograph people from all walks of life, from the jungles of Columbia to the streets of Putney.

It was wedding photography though that made the greatest impact on Neil. He decided to move into wedding photography because he loved the idea of being able to be part of a couples’ special day, knowing that his photographs of their special day give the couple wonderful memories for years to come.
Kaura-Rajgarhia - 0238
Neil aims to capture the most intimate, emotional and funny moments from a couples wedding, which he does by working in the background at weddings so that the end result is a documentary or reportage style. He of course finds time to snap the obligatory group shots and photos of the bride & groom together, but other than that, everything else is shot candidly with little posing.
Kaura-Rajgarhia - 0231
Neil says he loves photographing Asian weddings because they “allow me to blend in with guests and really get stuck into the action. This is particularly true during the baraat, the ceremony & of course during the dancing!”

How Neil deals with rain:
Weddings that are affected by rain or other bad weather can be some of the best for wedding photos. I believe the best way to deal with rain is to embrace it & use it, not try to fight it. Going out under a white umbrella and getting some beautiful shots can make for wonderful wedding photos. However, I’ve found that having a back up plan means I very rarely need to fall back on that plan!

One of Neil’s most memorable wedding experiences:
It has to be my first baraat! I was in the thick of it photographing the groom climbing on to a huge white horse when the dhol drummers struck up and the whole wedding erupted into dance. I love the photographs from that first baraat, I can still remember the excitement as everyone moved towards the bride’s family.

Art at its best

2016-04-28_0001

This picture is a sure-shot winner when it comes to depicting the mehendi design in an unusual and striking way. The way the mehendi-laden hand of an Indian wedding bride is viewed through a sheer curtain of a dupatta portrays the intricate design in all its beauty.

Not just ordinary

2016-04-28_0003

Anyone can click a simple picture but it takes passion and talent to get a picture like this. This picture illustrates the epitome of grace and elegance of an Indian wedding bride. It captures the myriad of emotions that a bride is going through on her wedding day. The shot is especially poignant because the bride is viewed through the sheer veil of her dupatta in the midst of a seemingly private moment.

It’s all about details

2016-04-28_0004

Moving away from the expected life-size portraits, we are treated here to a view of the more minute details that make up the flawless bridal look. This photo focuses on the beautiful maang tikka worn by an Indian wedding bride.

Let eyes do all the talking

2016-05-25_0001

At the time of her wedding, a bride experiences a cocktail of emotions ranging from being happy to start a new life to the sadness of leaving her parent’s home. This mixture of conflicting emotions can be seen in this intimate photograph of the bride on her wedding day.

In all her glory

2016-05-25_0002

A bride looks like a million bucks on her wedding day just like this particular bride who is oozing glamour in her stunning outfit and jewellery.  She is looking like a diva in the true sense of the word. Just as the bride has made an effort to look her best, the cameraman has done his best to capture her .

Look of love

2016-05-25_0003

Love is mesmerising as effectively demonstrated by this photo of the much-in-love couple as they appear completely besotted by each other. They don’t need words to express their feelings as the look of love captured by the photographer beautifully gets their emotions across.

A smile is contagious

2016-05-25_0004

This smiling Indian wedding bride all dolled up in her traditional wedding attire is a delight to look at. Her infectious smile captured with panache is something I love to revel on. Her orange coloured outfit makes a great contrast with the background, but it is her million dollar smile which is the USP of this click.

Bride & the bridesmaids

2016-05-25_0007

A bride’s friends and sisters play a quintessential role in a wedding. Their importance can be seen from this picture where a beautiful Indian wedding bride takes centre stage and her gorgeous colour-coordinated bridesmaids pose together by her side. This image wonderfully depicts their sisterhood and bond.

RR Photographic: Putting the personalisation in wedding photography

Russ and Ruth Chornolutskyy of RR Photographic are a young husband and wife wedding photography team based in Bournemouth. They cater for traditional English style weddings, Russian weddings and Asian weddings. Their photography style is a mix of traditional wedding photography (i.e. formal couple and group shots) and candid reportage photography to capture spontaneous, honest moments and create a narrative of the day.

The Process

When couples make an inquiry or booking, they like to setup an initial, informal meeting as this gives them a chance to show the couple some of their previous work, answer any questions they may have, discuss the type of photography and approach they prefer and find out about any special requirements.  This also gives the couple a chance to get to know RR Photographic, which is fantastic since no matter how many photos you may sample, it is vital that you have a rapport with your chosen wedding photographer as you will have them by your side for the majority of one of the most important days of your life!

RR Photographic offer all their clients a free engagement shoot which allows them to work with the couple before the wedding. They practice some poses for the classic album shots, and they show the couple the results on camera to help them feel more comfortable and explore their creative ideas to see what works and doesn’t work for them. This means that when it comes to the wedding day, the couple doesn’t need to worry about anything except enjoying their big day with their friends and family. This personal touch ensures that everyone is on the same page on the wedding day and the couple knows what to expect. As a result the beautiful formal photos are able to be captured quickly and easily by the photographers and the couple does not need to spend long away from the action.

As a bonus, RR Photographic gives their clients a second set of fully edited, high resolution photographs from the engagement shoot in addition to their wedding photos!

Personalisation

Adapting to each client is very important. RR Photographic understands that each person is unique and each behaves in front of the camera in a different way. Some people feel very comfortable, but others are initially tense and self-conscious; some people show their emotions easily and others need the photographer to draw it out of them. RR Photographic impress on couples that the photographer is their “friend” and is there to help them and give advice. They work with the bride and groom as a team, to achieve their shared goals of creating beautiful photos and vivid memories.
